I was chatting on the phone yesterday with a new client who gave their parents for their anniversary a family session gift certificate…love it! She remarked, and it made my heart sing a bit, how not only do the photos on my blog show how much fun people have together but that it looks like the experience of having the session together is so wonderful and a memory in itself. (Insert heart melting right here with some cheerleader pompom moves.)
She hit the nail on the head for what I hope all my sessions are and why I do this…that not only are there beautiful memories in the photos but also memories of the time together because how often do we take 2 hours to devote to being together like that.
But you also know what the truth is? I work with the greatest families. For real. Time and time again I write how much I love this family and that family…and I do. After a couple hours of watching and interacting with them I fall in love. Then hours of editing and seeing all the tiny details…I feel like they are my families. And it truly is an honour to get to spend this time with them.
The Wheaton’s are another love affair for me. I have known this family for a while…taught all their kids and get daily hugs from the adorable youngest son…thank you Ben!!!! And I’ve heard the father speak at school and work with the mom and they are awesome. They love their kids for exactly who they are and laugh at all life’s foibles. They are honest and their happyness comes through in their smiles. They are also just so cute. Love it. Their family session also included their two new exchange kids who are SO FUNNY!!! AND I need to add…that Carole is a blogger! Every morning I get her posts into my email and it starts my day for me! Follow her blog here:
Wheaton Family…thank you for having me a part of your life and photographing your family. I want to come cuddle on couches and text with you all:) Please add my number to your favourites.
-love damara(mrs natenhorst still for you Ben:))
I am pretty sure that this is where I asked the parents, “If your kids were a type of candy what would they be?” and the dad replied, “M&M’s…because they’re round and nutty.” Oh what dad’s say to be funny…love it! My brother would have pulled something out like that about me too!
I asked the kids before the session to bring something that represented them as a surprise for their parents…and it was so sweet to see a favourite doll, a crown and a football helmet.
So this great family decided to bring a few “family” props along for the session…one being their dog and the other being their cellphones. Now I think that this could be an example of how to not fighht something but rather just join in. Their kids love to text and so as a family they text together all the time. Not just when they are at school and needing something…but like…they are sitting in the living room together watching tv. I love it! This should be in a book of how to get your untalkative teenagers to start chatting with you! They were kind of sheepish about this but I think it is brilliant!
I may have mentioned my super powers before…my strongest is brainstorming…no joke…I am good. But another amazing ability I have is taking self-portraits with the camera…this might be more of a learned superpower and not naturally bestowed upon me…but in any case it results in a beautiful memory like this one:) Oh how I love this family photo…because don’t I fit right in?! The last photo is a first in a family session…a photo of me! And this is my model pose to elongate my neck so there are no multiple chins.
